The novel uses many different strands of reality to weave texture, adventure, humour and philosophy into the story.

An Extract from The Awakening
The first message was for Babita. “I am a good spirit, but there are many bad spirits, and they will destroy you. You must not play with this board again because if you do, you will lose your soul to a bad spirit, and it will take you over, and you will commit suicide. On the 5th June, 1956, there will be an uprising in Ceylon; the Sinhalese people will turn against the Tamils in Colombo. It will put the country into civil war for many years. The country will be able to avoid the bloodshed now by not allowing any Bills to be passed on that date. You and your family must leave for Jaffna before this date, if you do not do so your father will be so badly beaten up at Colombo that he may not survive. Please take what I am saying seriously…
